Themed tour: Willy Brandt and German reunification
“Now what belongs together is growing together.” Willy Brandt’s quote from 10 November 1989, the day after the fall of the Berlin Wall, has become a catchphrase for the reunification process. Just under a year later, on 3 October 1990, the former Chancellor stood on the VIP stand at midnight during the celebrations in front of the Reichstag building in Berlin, alongside Federal President Richard von Weizsäcker, Federal Chancellor Helmut Kohl and Foreign Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher. With tears in his eyes, he witnessed the realisation of German reunification.
What made the events of 1989–90 so special for Willy Brandt? To what extent did his policies towards the East and Germany as a whole contribute to overcoming the division of Germany? And why was German reunification, for him, only conceivable within a European context? Join us on a fascinating themed tour through the Forum Willy Brandt Berlin to find out.
