Berlin Freedom Week Mobil

Berlin Freedom Week: The annual citywide initiative for freedom and democracy celebrates the courage to resist oppression and to promote democracy around the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Under the patronage of the Governing Mayor of Berlin, it features insights from dissidents, impactful cultural and interactive events. Above all, it will clearly reaffirm our conviction that freedom cannot be taken for granted. It must be defended.

The Berlin Freedom Week Mobil is the mobile stage of Berlin Freedom Week. The mobile stage will stop for around five hours a day at central and symbolic locations, displaying symbols of the struggle for freedom and democracy, inviting discussion, and raising difficult questions about the state of freedom in today’s world.

The centerpiece of the mobile stage is a 1:1 replica of the Berlin Freedom Bell, donated to West Berlin by millions of US citizens in the wake of the Second World War. With it, we commemorate the decades-long struggle for freedom in Berlin and its special connection to the United States, the world's oldest modern democracy. Our “Freedom Phones” allow the audience to hear directly from dissidents and democracy defenders. We invite everyone to find their own answer to the question “What does freedom mean to me?” And we invite you to celebrate freedom and democracy under our contemporary version of the historic Liberty Tree.
