The Trial of Hans Litten
The play The Trial of Hans Litten is based on historical facts. It follows the ordeal of the famous lawyer Hans Litten, who exposed Adolf Hitler in court and was imprisoned in a concentration camp for it. There he meets Erich Mühsam and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Carl von Ossietzky. The three—despite political imprisonment and torture until death—retain their humor and demonstrate greatness, hope, and humanity in the fight to preserve democracy. At the same time, the play accompanies Hans Litten’s mother, Irmgard Litten, in her desperate struggle for her son’s life, offering insight into the world of the Gestapo and the game of power. Hans Litten died at the age of 34 in Dachau concentration camp. His civil courage and commitment against National Socialism serve as both a role model and a warning.
