Americas’s Democracy Under Attack. How Did It Come to This, and What Comes Next?

On-site
Workshop

This conversation with Larry Diamond (Stanford University) will center on the political trajectory of the United States. When the long-standing anchor of the democratic world veers off course, the consequences extend well beyond its borders. To understand how Europe should deal with the United States under Donald Trump, we need a clear and realistic picture—neither alarmist nor sugar-coated.

Is the United States still a democracy at risk, or has the Trump administration already crossed the Rubicon toward a post-democratic regime—one seeking to bring all public institutions under control and prevent the peaceful transfer of power through elections? Can this trend still be reversed? And how are domestic and foreign policy intertwined?

Following introductory remarks by Larry Diamond (Stanford University), there will be time for questions and open discussion. The conversation will be moderated by Ralf Fücks (Center for Liberal Modernity).
