BAB School Cinema: "Sputnik"

Vor Ort
Filmscreening

We invite school classes from grades 4-6, along with their teachers, to the “Sputnik” school cinema. Director Markus Dietrich made his feature film debut with this children’s film in 2012. “Sputnik” was nominated for the German Film Award in the Best Children’s Film category in 2014 and won the German Film Critics’ Award for Best Children’s Film that same year. Following the film, director and screenwriter Markus Dietrich and BAB historian Dr. Andrea Bahr will be present for Q&A.

Synopsis of the film: When Uncle Mike moves to West-Berlin, Rieke is furious. She can’t visit him there because she’s not allowed to cross the border. Germany is divided into an eastern and a western sector, and there’s a guarded wall at the border. Anyone who tries to sneak across it will be shot!

But Rieke has an idea: Together with her friends Fabian and Jonathan, she wants to build a machine and simply “beam” Uncle Mike back over the wall to the village—just like in the TV series she knows.

Director Markus Dietrich, who also wrote the screenplay for the film, has achieved something special: making an entertaining children’s film about the fall of 1989 and the fall of the Berlin Wall.
