“Busy Bees in the Hamster Wheel”: A Discussion with Mahide Lein // PANDAwomen

The cultural sector is a precarious stretch of the labour market, exposed to the merciless winds of uneven funding and political changes of power. Despite difficult conditions, more and more women have been present over the past decades not only on stage but also behind the scenes: they organise events and festivals, secure funding and coordinate artists and colleagues.

By now, women hold half of all leadership positions in this business. Yet although the trend is moving towards a more gender-equal cultural scene, those at the forefront of this change have little cause to celebrate. Time and again, they find themselves on the edge of burnout – too much work for too little money. What invisible pressure makes them pour love, attention and energy into their projects beyond their limits and all expectations? How does being socialised as a woman shape their professional work? Who can they connect with?
