Democracy for All? Political Participation in a Diverse City

Vor Ort
Diskussion

Around one million Berliners – roughly one quarter of the city’s population – cannot vote because they do not hold German citizenship. At the same time, they live, work, engage with their communities and help shape the city every day.

What does it mean for our democracy when such a large part of the population is excluded from elections? And how can people with migration backgrounds become politically active, represent their interests and participate in decision-making even without the right to vote?

At this WahlheYmat Talk, we want to explore what political participation can look like in a diverse society today – and how democratic structures need to evolve so that more people can be heard and included. Together with our guests and the audience, we will discuss existing opportunities for participation, practical experiences and new ideas for the future of democracy in Berlin and in a diverse European society.

WahlheYmat Talks is an interactive discussion format: after the moderated panel conversation, we open the floor to questions, experiences and perspectives from the audience.

Doors open at 17:45.
