Exhibition Opening: “Expats” by Marina Koldobskaya // PANDAwomen
Berlin can feel like a modern Babylon: people arrive with different languages, memories and reasons for leaving home. In “Expats”, artist Marina Koldobskaya paints portraits of people whose lives carry stories of war, migration and everyday survival. Her own arrival in Berlin is part of the work’s starting point, but the exhibition looks outward, toward the lives taking place beside hers.
Born in Leningrad and now based in Berlin, Marina Koldobskaya is an artist, curator and art critic. In the early 1990s she was part of “I Love You, Life!”, a pioneering women’s art group in post-Soviet Russia. She later curated contemporary art projects at the State Hermitage Museum; everyday life, folk imagery and pop culture have long run through her work.
Each portrait asks for a little time and attention. What happens when we notice that another person’s crisis may be happening right next to our own, yet looks nothing like it? The opening is a chance to meet Koldobskaya’s work and the people it brings into view.
