Freedom goes Concert: a musical event at the BND
There are moments in history when words are no longer enough to describe the relief and hope of an entire people. Such a moment occurred when the legendary cellist Mstislav Leopoldovich Rostropovich took up his cello at Checkpoint Charlie just two days after the fall of the Wall. By performing Johann Sebastian Bach's Suite No. 4 in E-flat major for solo cello, BWV 1010, he gave freedom a voice that reached far beyond the borders of divided Berlin.
As part of Berlin Freedom Week, shortly after the anniversary of this historic event, the BND invites you to experience this musical legacy once again in a very special setting. The timeless piece will be performed at the BND Visitors’ Center by the young, talented cellist Tzu-Shao Chao.
Let us experience together how Bach's compositions continue to carry the spirit of freedom in the heart of the BND Visitor Center.
Tzu-Shao Chao, born in Taiwan in 2001, began learning the cello at the age of four. He completed his Bachelor's degree at the Cologne University of Music and Dance under Prof. Maria Kliegel. He is currently pursuing a Master's in Chamber Music and a postgraduate certificate under Prof. Wen-Sinn Yang at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich, having previously completed a Master's in Cello. He has received awards from various international competitions, most recently winning first prize at the 2026 August Everding Music Competition.
