Between 1951 and 1990, the Berlin-Mitte Remand Centre, also known as UHA II, was located on Keibelstraße in the GDR. It was under the authority of the Ministry of the Interior and was situated within the headquarters of the People’s Police. At the remand centre, individuals facing various allegations awaited the outcome of the investigations and court proceedings. ‘Keibelstraße’ is a symbol of state repression and arbitrariness, where one can gain an understanding of notions of political opposition and social deviance, as well as of ‘ordinary’ crime under a dictatorship.

The guided tour of the former remand centre explores the history of the site, the fates of the detainees and the conditions under which they were held at Keibelstraße. Another focus is on the structural alterations made for film and music productions.

The tour lasts approximately 60 minutes and is in German. Another tour will take place at 2pm.
