Protecting human rights defenders to protect our freedom
For many human rights defenders (HRD) and human rights organisations, threatened by war and persecution, Germany – and Berlin in particular – has for years been a safe and free haven where they can work and regain their strength. The city’s history offers hope and inspiration and the many different diaspora communities may offer some reminders of home.
However, today, it is becoming increasingly difficult for human rights defenders to come to Berlin and settle here. The bureaucratic hurdles are high, and even those who have been granted asylum in Germany often have no long-term perspective of continuing their human rights work.
How can we as civil society support HRD in exile to find safety and stability in Berlin and what are the benefits for our society, if we listen to HRDs in exile and help them to integrate here?
We invite you to discuss ways of supporting and collaborating with Parliamentarians and outstanding human rights defenders in Berlin.
