Stories of Freedom: Films About the Courage to Be Free at Colosseum
On 11 November, Colosseum Berlin becomes a cinema of freedom: Stories of Freedom presents international documentaries about people who stand up to autocracy and injustice. The programme includes Hope Is a Word, about Nigerian poet Nnimmo Bassey, who encourages young people in the oil-poisoned Niger Delta to write and resist; Our Colors Never Fade, about queer soldiers who defend Ukraine while fighting for equal rights at home; and Killing Anna, about a Syrian researcher who invents an online identity to expose a perpetrator of the Tadamon massacre.
The films were selected by distinguished international juries, including Iranian journalist and women’s rights activist Masih Alinejad, Venezuelan opposition politician Leopoldo López, former UN Special Rapporteur on Torture Manfred Nowak, human rights activist Carine Kanimba and civil rights activist Frank Ebert. The films are presented in cooperation with Berlin organisations, each followed by a conversation with the audience.
A special screening of The Spies Among Us with German subtitles, followed by a conversation, completes the programme. And freedom comes to life beyond the screen, too: at the interactive VR station, visitors can step right into stories about freedom. Just drop by and give it a try!
In the morning, Colosseum opens its doors to school classes: two free screenings with a post-film conversation invite pupils from year 4 upwards to explore freedom, courage and human rights. Teachers can register their class via the event page.
Stories of Freedom was initiated in 2025 together with Starlounge and is curated by The Good Media Network. The event is part of Berlin Freedom Week and is supported by the Senate Chancellery of Berlin and Berliner Sparkasse.
