A man, perhaps born in the wrong place, sets out to be free and independent: Tassilo, young and in love with music and men, wants to escape from Rostock-Platte to the freedom of West Berlin. Torn between despair and euphoria, he plans his escape. Because at home, he no longer feels safe: “Mother says she’ll do anything to prevent this. Even betray me. Her war declaration is brief and clear – not as a mother, but as a comrade.”

It feels like a miracle when, in 1986, at just nineteen years old, he arrives lost and searching at Zoo Station with blue eyes full of longing. Three years later, the Berlin Wall falls, and he makes a discovery that changes his life…

From letters, diary entries, childhood memories, and Stasi files, Victor Schefé crafts a novel that radiates with energy.
