Pre-event: Opening of the traveling exhibition “The Women of Hoheneck”
The women of Hoheneck were imprisoned in the notorious Hoheneck women's prison because they were critical of the regime or could no longer tolerate the restrictions on their freedom of movement. The women's stories clearly show how deeply the GDR dictatorship interfered in people's lives. The women of Hoheneck could not and would not accept this. They planned to leave their country – and were arrested.
The exhibition shows 20 black-and-white portraits of 19 women and one man who was imprisoned with his mother as a child. The photographs are accompanied by short texts by Cathia Hecker. The texts highlight the biographies and personalities of those portrayed.
The exhibition can be viewed free of charge until November 30, 2025, at the Campus for Democracy, “Haus 22” (Magdalenenstraße subway station), daily from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The venue is not wheelchair accessible.
